Former Student to Launch New Sports and Wellness Grant at Dunrae Gardens Elementary School

Montreal - Thursday, November 24, 2016

Kayla Segal will return to her former elementary school, Dunrae Gardens in Town of Mount Royal (235 Dunrae), on Monday, November 28 (10 am) to formally announce the establishment of the Kayla Segal Sports and Wellness Grant.

Professionally Segal is a financial security advisor and independent life insurance broker. However, her passion remains competing in grueling triathlons across North America. In order to support health and wellness programs in the English Montreal School Board, she has now embarked upon an initiative to offer a grant of $1,000 to one elementary school and $1,000 to one high school in need of support to launch a physical activity or wellness related project. She has undertaken various fundraising activities to raise the money.

Throughout my life, I have had the opportunity to be involved in many different sports and extra-curricular activities,” she says. “As an adult athlete, I experience the first-hand psychological, social and physical benefits of living an active lifestyle that began at a very young age. Participation in sports and living healthier can play a positive role in youth development that often results in improved academic achievement, higher self-esteem, and fewer behavioral problems. It can act as a necessary outlet for many students and it can create opportunities for important social connections throughout all stages of life. Increased screen-time and less active play among children have led to significant declines in mental wellness and overall health.

Projects may be related to increasing opportunities for participation in physical activity, promoting good nutritional habits, addressing mental health issues via sport and/or other wellness topics. Applicants must be a member of the school community (staff member, parent, volunteer) and have the Principal’s support for grant application and implementation of the proposed project. Funds may be used to purchase equipment, materials and supplies, or hire outside personnel.
